Thursdays always suck. Is it because we're feeling the burn out from the week and are desperately in need of the weekend to come? On Thursdays my children are tired, whiny and pretty much cry and cling the whole day. I get headaches, I'm tired too, but must persevere for the rest of the day (and then one more day after that until Saturday comes).
Today was no exception to sucky Thursdays.
I had a job interview on Wednesday morning for a Reading Specialist position at a nearby school. The interview went great and to the employer's surprise, I am already well-versed (and in love) with the curriculum they just purchased to be used by the soon-to-be-hired instructor. I conveniently had some student work with me and I used this work to give my interviewers a little lesson as to how the data collected by the teacher is used to drive the instruction forward. The interview was at 8:30am. They called at 2:30pm to offer me the position. I was thrilled! Granted, it was only a summer position - 5 weeks of instruction for 4 hours a day. But I was excited to be back in the career world again.
Then, Thursday morning at 8am, the employer calls again. And withdrew her offer of employment. Oh, Thursdays, I don't like you. She withdrew her offer because my teaching license is expired and they can't even interview someone who doesn't have a current license. So I explained to her that I knew it was expired, but I do have all of credits to renew my license and it would only take a quick call to the Department of Education to do so. She told me to call their Human Resources department if I needed further clarification.
Sigh.
So I called the Dept. of Ed., filled out a form online, paid a processing fee, and ordered my official transcripts from the university where I am taking my graduate courses. Done in 45 minutes.
I then called the HR Department and spoke to a not-so-nice lady who told me there is nothing I can do, they've offered the position to someone else. And she told me I should have renewed my license last summer when it expired.
(as a side note, I wasn't sure for how long I would be staying at home with my girls so I didn't bother to renew it last summer in case I didn't need it for a few years)
Needless to say I'm frustrated and very disappointed. Frustrated that they didn't even give me a bit of time to organize the renewal of my license (which I obviously would have before I start meeting with students) and annoyed by the bureaucratic process that prevented me from getting a great job. Yes, it was an oversight on my part, but it was a quick fix and now I'm perfectly qualified (although clearly I was qualified before...).
On the bright side, now I have more time for working on my tan at the beach this summer with my girls!
